Locals Wanted to Shop at Fred’s Fish and Game

Dexter: New Blood takes place within the small city of Iron Lake, New York. The brand new location is a snowy, tiny, close-knit group in stark distinction to Dexter‘s former home in Miami. Filming for Dexter: New Blood actually did not occur in New York. The crew chose a different snowy location to create Iron Lake and the locals wanted to check out Fred’s Fish & Game.

The place was ‘Dexter: New Blood’ filmed?

Though the revival takes place in New York, a lot of Dexter: New Blood‘s filming actually took place in a town called Shelburne Falls in Western Massachusetts. The little town ended up being the perfect location.

“I remember being struck by Shelburne Falls — perfect small town, doesn’t look too crowded, it’s quaint, it’s type of candy, it’s chilly for certain,” stated Dexter government producer Scott Reynolds on the Dexter: New Blood Wrap-Up podcast.

One other government producer, Clyde Phillips, known as Shelburne Falls “probably the prettiest town” throughout a San Diego Comedian-Con@Residence panel. “We started shooting at the beginning of February because we needed a lot of snow. We took advantage,” Phillips stated.

“That frozen lake is a real frozen lake. That’s a single shot that Marcos did in real-time. And we wanted it to be a small town. Population is something like 2700 where everybody knows everybody else. People know things that happened two seconds ago.”

Dexter works at Fred’s Fish & Game in ‘Dexter: New Blood’

Dexter has a brand new job at Fred’s Fish & Game within the revival and manufacturing designer Eric Weiler selected a clothes retailer to flip into Dexter’s new place of business.

“Originally we talked about building Fred’s on a stage,” Weiler stated on the Dexter: New Blood Wrap-Up podcast. “But I just felt like it was too important to see that bridge and the lake and all the interactions in and out of the store with Dexter coming and going that I felt like we had to have it there.”

Weiler then defined how they remodeled the shop into the set of Dexter: New Blood. “We completely emptied the whole place out, nothing left, painted everything, we put a mural on the wall, we changed all the light fixtures, we painted the metal ceiling, we added textured ceiling to make it look old fashioned. It came out really well,” he stated.

Shelburne Falls residents wished to store at Fred’s

The staff apparently did such an excellent job on the set of Fred’s that the residents of Shelburne Falls tried to store there. “It was funny too. The town was very excited about us being there,” Reynolds stated on the podcast.

“They also wanted to go shopping in Fred’s. Like it looked so much like this great fish and sports store that we had to put sign up being like, ‘This is not a working store. You cannot come inside,’” he continued.

“People did try to come in. ‘This stores great. We needed something like this,’” Weiler remembered. “It was such an enjoyable town. Everybody was so friendly. Nothing but good experiences.”

Dexter: New Blood airs at 9 p.m. ET on Sundays on Showtime.
